What is a LocationCode?

A LocationCode is a short code that represents a geographic location on Earth. Instead of a long pair of latitude and longitude numbers, you get a code you can read, type, say out loud and share. LocationCodes are created and resolved by LocationCode.me, the official LocationCode service.

If you receive a LocationCode, enter it at LocationCode.me to view the location. Every valid code also has its own page at https://locationcode.me/{code}, for example https://locationcode.me/HDK.SZF.VN3.

The LocationCode formats

Standard LocationCode

XXX.XXX.XXX

Example: HDK.SZF.VN3

Nine characters covering a small area on the ground — short enough to say over the phone and precise enough to find a doorway, entrance or meeting point.

Precise LocationCode

XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

Example: HDK.SZF.VN3.BH8

Twelve characters for a much tighter area on the ground, for when you need to point at something smaller than a building entrance.

LocationCode 3D

XXXX.XXXX.XXXX.XXXX

Example: HDPU.VJVW.WT32.222E

The example above is a real 3D code for the MI5 building in London at ground level. Sixteen characters in four groups of four, so a 3D code is instantly recognisable. As well as the position on the ground it carries a vertical position — a height band above sea level — which can help point to the right level of a tall building. The final character is a check character, so a mistyped 3D code is rejected rather than sending you to the wrong place. Height comes from the device that created the code, and device height accuracy can vary.

Building with LocationCode

The website is free for people looking up and sharing codes. Software, websites, apps and any automated or high-volume use should use the official LocationCode API, which has API keys, usage limits and plans.
